Hopefully a fitter 2009

4th January

First off, Happy New Year, I hope you all had a good time bringing in 2009. The trip down to Devon was fairly good although being a 70th birthday party with an average age in the sixties it was all over by 00:30.

The last few days have been fairly busy, reorganizing the house, going to Kita’s chief bridesmaids 21st and going on my first bike ride of the new year. It’s not so much a new years resolution, I’ve been talking about getting fit/losing an inch or two on the waist for a while, more a renewed effort.

The ride should have been around 16-18 miles (off/on road) with a stop for lunch in the middle. When we set off about 11am it was -2°C and we soon warmed up but it was very hard work for me. For some reason everywhere we stopped at for lunch was closed, you’d think Saturdays would be a safe bet for a pub lunch but apparently not. With no food my energy hit rock bottom around 11-12 miles in and we had to call for a lift. I was struggling to walk up a hill let alone cycle it!

The rest of yesterday was a bit of a right-off for me and I spent most of the evening napping. Next time (next Saturday in fact) I’m going to make a point of having some glucose tablets on hand, just in case.

I’m quite shocked just how low my fitness levels are at the moment. Don’t get me wrong its not hard to get up the stairs or play football for an hour but sustained exercise is a lot harder than it was 18-24 months ago. I’m going to try and take up jogging once or twice a week down the canal in the evening. I would cycle but getting the bike out in Reading isn’t the most fun and also takes a lot longer to get ready.

My fitness plan ’09 is going to be sit-ups/press-ups before bed, a jog or two a week (30-45 minutes) and a bike ride of a Saturday. Hopefully that will help shift a spare tyre or two!

Well, if I’m around of a Saturday, I’ll come along for the ride! Do me good too.

Hope you manage to keep it all up.

I’m having a fatter 2009 – so far anyway.

Don’t take glucose tablets unless you really want trouble with crashing glucose levels. Instead pack a tesco value maltloaf. 1/2 a maltloaf is good for about 1 hour hardish riding, and was my main energy source on that ‘Chiltern 100′ ride I did a few years back.

Thanks for that Toni. Looking back just about anything would have done!

Oops my dear, a plugin that changes full names to short/nick names wasn’t installed.

All sorted now :)
