Mini upgrade, Mini failure

27th October

The Mini RAM upgrade was a real success, in and out in about 5 minutes and the speed jump is really noticeable. One thing I thought over the weekend was this, it is the first machine I have owned that has a whole GB of RAM, for just memory rather than being cut up and used for the video as well.

What I couldn’t get over was that I’m an IT geek/nerd etc and it’s taken for this long to be the case, I should have done this a long time ago.  Now though, for my next machine a gig of memory will be a minimum requirement and actually, I suspect it would be quite hard not to have that as a minimum. Oh, how quick this industry moves.

So that was the Mini upgrade but the Mini Failure :( Nothing to do with the Mac or in fact any failing of what I got out the shop all those years ago, instead the only previous upgrade I had done on it, the optical drive, has decided it no longer likes CD’s. DVD’s are fine, read/write happy as anything but CD’s are a no no.

Alas it would appear I am not alone in this Pioneer DVR-K06 failure. Thankfully it is still in warranty and I’m hopeful that ebuyer will do a like for like replacement ASAP. Just a shame I didn’t know about this issue 10 months ago but oh well, at least it’s in warranty. This would have been really annoying if it failed at 13 months for instance. I guess it will likely have to be replaced again in a year, judging by others experience but, well, there’s not a lot I can do.

Anyone got experience of ebuyer returns?

Dan

**UPDATE**

Well, the drive is all packed up and I got an RMA out of ebuyer so things are looking up :) The drives not available on their site any more so I’m hopeful that they will credit my account and I can get a more up to date model etc, here’s hoping!

Hey Dan, what kind of a setup do you use for your main system?

Just wondering is all.

Hi Randall, my current main machine is a first generation PowerPC G4 Mac Mini @ 1.5 GHz, which is roughly equivalent to a 2 GHz P4 if I remember right. It has a little 80GB HD on the inside and a 180GB external HD. 1 GB RAM, the max it can have and an ATI 64MB video card. All running 10.4.11, Tiger.

All in all it does what I want fairly well, I’d love to upgrade to the latest Mini or even an iMac but funds are a little lacking!

Since the memory upgrade it’s happy enough with iPhoto, iTunes, FF, Adium (really good IM client) and Photoshop running at the same time, not blazingly quick but not too slow either.

Ebuyer returns are very quick and painless, just request an RMA number on the site, they will authorize it and give you a label to print and put on the parcel to send back.

I’m gonna upgrade my ram in my macbook i think… 1GB isnt really enough for me, probably gonna put it up to maximum (4GB, about £50). Quite surprised that your mac mini is the first machine you’ve had with 1GB of ram. Would have thought your laptop would have had 1GB.

Hopefully there will be new mac mini’s soon and they wont be getting rid of them like the rumors are suggesting.

If I was running Tiger instead of Leopard and only the macbook display, I think my 1GB would have been enough. but the extra ram needed for spaces and my extra (1680×1050) display dont leave enough to run things like Maya or Flash Pro (or both together lol).

Gary, I went through the motions to sort out the RMA but I need to call them to get the number. Guess to make sure it really needs replacing etc

Also, looks like my drive is no longer available on ebuyer, any thoughts as to what their action may be?

Yeah, this isn’t the first gig I’ve had in a machine but my laptop has shared memory for the graphics.
