Somewhat excitabibble :D

19th February

Just got back in from worship training and I’m so excited/happy. Something I haven’t been musically for months possibly as long as a year.

I played so well, I didn’t bother to set up a music stand, I just closed my eyes and played what my mind wanted. It sounded great and to cap it off for the first time (I think) ever I felt I was worshipping as well. It was tuneful and complimentary to the singers and yet added another dynamic. Also Gareth (worship leader) even complimented me on my muted playing :D He usually says nicely played but this was one of those, wow he noticed I was using a mute and went into some detail about what he liked :D

I felt so close to God and unless my ears deceived me the tunes coming from my trumpet were showing that.

As if playing good wasn’t enough, Gareth also said when the rota is updated in a couple of weeks that I’ll be on there :D, I can’t wait especially if it is even half as good as this evening.

God is good and evidently plays the long game. I haven’t felt (playing wise) that great for ages (ever since Sarah died really). Old music groups I was in (Brass bands, Jazz Bands) never really happened for me. Admittedly there was a certain amount of enthusiasm lacking but it’s back :)

God bless

Dan

Nicely done sir. When you’re next around for a Sunday worship time here we’ll have to get you to sit in.

We too had worship team get together (I won’t call it ‘practice’) this evening. It’s usually a forum for introducing new songs, worshipping with stuff we know and talking through things. Having a keyboard player (Jane M) has completely changed dynamics and it’s been interesting as a guitar player finding someone that just completely shoulders me aside, both musically and volume wise. She’s been playing in her front room too long.

Kind of interesting dealing with peoples musical influences too. One person is a bit classical, an bit ‘nice’ and technical. Another is all drum’n'bass and grinding rythms. I’m, just an aging rocker trying to hold it all together without offending anyone (boy have I got OLD!).

It’s also interesting trying to map a chordal path through a new piece, when I know just which chords work fine for guitar, but they’re inherently boring for the other musicians. We covered one song this evening (Jackie brought a CD) where the chorus had THE worship song chord pattern cliche. It’s the same exact pattern as blessed be, we wanna see Jesus lifted high and half a dozen others. There was even a little improv chorus “yes I like Sundays, now I like Sundays” using the tune of the Boomtown Rats “I don’t like Mondays”.

We finished and I got the place locked up around 10.40, then headed to Tesco. I’ve just finished putting stuff away, and I’m bushed.

Toni,

I look forward to it although when I do sit in could you give me a rough idea as to what will be played as whilst my site-reading is ok listen-playing is somewhat harder :P

I like the whole mapping a chordal path through, never seems to bother me being a melody instrument, makes my life somewhat easier :) Although I did have to look over the bass players shoulder for a ‘crunch’ chord.

Also like the sound of the improv :)

That’s great Dan, I’m so glad you felt so close to God. Times like that are really special.
